المكتبة الرئيسة بجامعة السلطان قابوس


أنشأت المكتبة الرئيسية عام 1986، وفتحت أبوابها للطلاب وأعضاء هيئة التدريس في شهر سبتمبر من نفس العام، وظلت المكتبة في نمو مطرد منذ تأسيسها والى الآن، حيث بلغت مقتنياتها 233695 مجلدا و 8096 مادة سمعية وبصرية، وحوالي 3342 عنوان دورية وثقافية (481 عربية و2861 إنجليزية) منها 1398 جارية (235 عربية و1163 إنجليزية).

About Library

The University libraries strive to build and maintain a collection of m aterials in various media, and of sufficient range and depth to support the educational programs and research activities of the University colleges
The Main Library is centrally located in a three storey building, a location benefiting its importance to all segments of the University community. Two other major support facilities, the Center for Information Systems and the Center for Educational Technology, are located with the Main Library building. Besides the Main Library, there is a separate and self-sufficient Medical Library adjacent to the College of Medicine. The Commerce Information Center is located in the College of Commerce and Economics. Also, there is a small library attached to the Mosque.
The Main Library aims to fulfill several objectives such as:
╖ To develop and maintain a balanced collection of materials in various media to support the teaching programs and research activities of the University.
╖ To provide professional expertise to users by accessing both local reference sources and those available from other countries through postal media and modern telecommunication links.
╖ To enhance the students' learning ability by providing them with instruction in research methodology and use of contemporary information sources.
Public Services departments are located on all three floors of the Library. Audiovisual Materials and viewing areas for male and female students are located in block F, near the mosque. Reference, Circulation, Interlibrary loan, Reserves and Literature Searching through CD-ROM are found on the first floor. Reference Desk is located near the Reference Collection, behind Circulation Desks, and is always manned by a librarian whose duty is to assist users seeking information about the library, its resources and services. The Special Collections, the general stacks, the current periodicals and newspaper collections and the microforms are located on the second floor. Back sets of periodical are available on the ground floor. Library administrative office are also located on this floor. Photocopying facilities are available in all library floors.
Males enter the Library by using the first floor entrance, while females enter from the walkway at the first floor level.

Reference Services
Location: The Reference Section is located on the first floor of the Main Library behind Circulation Desks.
Reference Collection:
It consists of encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, statistical sources, directories and similar reference publications. Books are shelved by subject regardless of their language. Commercial directories are arranged in a separate sequence.
Reference Assistance:
The function of the Reference Section is to answer general and specific reference questions, assist users in using various Library catalogues, offer instructions regarding the use of appropriate reference recourses. Consult the on-duty Reference Librarian for guidance. Reference assistance is available till the Library is open. For short inquiries, call ext. 1521.
Databases
Users can also access to various electronic indexes and bibliographic databases. All databases are carefully selected to suite education and research requirements of all university colleges and department.
Interlibrary Loans:
It is a service through which we borrow from other libraries books, journal articles and other materials not available in the Main Library. Requests for materials should be submitted to on ILL forms available at the Reference Desk. Normally, the usual delivery time for a loan request is one month and that of a photocopy is two weeks only. Patrons are notified immediately upon receipt of the material. Borrowers must return materials by due date as specified by the Interlibrary Loan Librarian. For more information, please call ext. 1523.

The library subscribes to electronic journals through different vendors such as:

Photocopying:
A number of photocopy machines are available on all floors for reproducing library materials. Photocopy machines for males are located near the Serials section and for females in the middle of the western wall on the second floor. Two more photocopy machines are housed in the reference section to xerox reference material, since reference books are not allowed to be taken out of the reference area. Some additional machines are available on the ground floor in the area of backsets of periodicals.
Orientation and Bibliographic Instruction:
The Reference staff conduct tours of the Library facilities and provide group instruction in the use of Library resources. Such tours can also be scheduled for interested faculty members. Advance booking is required for such a program. On request, the Reference Section also organizes programs for library users in their specific areas. For instruction please call ext. 1521 .

Circulation Services
Location:
The Circulation Desk is located on the first floor. Those who wish to borrow materials from the Library must first report to this Desk to sign a registration for m. By singing the registration form, the borrower agrees to observe the by-laws, policies and legations of the University Main Library. Before completing a registration form, the borrower must present a valid University Identification Card for bar coding.
Library Card:
The University ID Card also serves as the Library borrowing Card, and the borrower must present it each time he/she borrows materials from the Library, or when requested by the Library staff.
Borrowing:
Books are checked out at the first floor Circulation Desk. Audio/Visual materials are located and checked out at the ground floor in block F, near the mosque. The borrower must present the ID Card each time she/he wishes to borrow. If materials are taken out of the Library without being properly checked out, a security alarm will sound as the borrower pass through the exit gate.
There will be no borrowing transactions during the late 30 minutes before closing

Oman Collection
Location:
The Special Collections are housed in the Oman Room in Room No. 2008 on the second floor of the Main Library.
Collection:
The Special Collections consists of the following: Omani Collection comprising of monographs on Oman or written by Omani nationals; Serials containing regular or irregular publications brought out by various Ministries and Departments of the Government of the Sultanate of Oman; Periodical articles on Oman which appear in Arabic and English periodicals from time to time; Master and Doctoral dissertations on Oman or written by Omani nationals; Geographical and City maps on Oman which are produced by the Directorate of National Survey in Oman and those purchased elsewhere.
The Collection also includes Omani National Standards and a few overseas ones; as well as the College Catalogue Collection which is normally available on microfiche and can be read and printed through microform reader/printers available in the Oman Room. Some College Catalogues on hard copy are also available. For inquiries, please call 1531.
Special Collections Catalogue:
Materials in Special Collections are mostly recorded in the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). Three publications entitled Special Collections, Oman Collection and Guide to Omani Thesis have also been compiled in both Arabic and English to serve as additional tools in identifying and locating materials in the Special Collections. These publications are also available at the Reference Desk and in the Oman Room.
